Local Governments working for Local Governments

BayREN is a highly effective and trusted group of local governments that deliver targeted, integrated, and regional-scale climate solutions focused on energy, water, and resilience. As illustrated in the adjacent graphic, BayREN provides three main areas of expertise and services:

1. Promoting Healthy and Energy Efficient Buildings for single family and multifamily residents and for small-medium commercial property owners;

2. Building Capacity for local governments to increase their impacts with training, mentoring, and a range of resources throughout the nine Bay Area counties;

3. Reducing Carbon Emissions by catalyzing regional activities and connecting them to existing initiatives.

Energy Atlas 2.0

The Energy Atlas Project provides Californians, and those interested in ongoing energy transitions, with the opportunity to interact with one of the largest sets of disaggregated building energy data.

The data provides building energy consumption information that links utility account information to building characteristics, sociodemographic data, and other significant attributes that can be expressed spatially. The public portion of the Energy Atlas is a front-end website that displays spatially aggregated energy consumption statistics at an annual temporal resolution for most neighborhoods, cities, and counties in California.

Codes & Standards Program

The BayREN Codes & Standards (C&S) Program is a joint effort of Bay Area cities and counties to achieve full compliance with provisions of the California Energy Code. This ambitious and engaging local program aims to:

  • Establish metrics to evaluate compliance with existing energy codes.

  • Identify and deliver targeted training for those involved in energy code enforcement.

  • Accelerate energy code compliance throughout the region.

The C&S Program is a locally driven effort of local governments to reduce energy use in buildings through improved design and construction. The program is administered jointly by each of the nine Bay Area counties and ABAG.
