Regional Forum - Performance Standards: A Tool to Decarbonize Existing Buildings
Yerba Buena Room (Bay Area Metro Center)
375 Beale Street
San Francisco, CA 94105
United States

At BayREN Codes & Standards' first hybrid attendance forum in San Francisco, attendees learned about the promise and challenges of Building Performance Standards (BPS). State and local governments have ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions, and this emerging policy tool requires existing buildings to reduce energy use or greenhouse gas emissions. The concept is simple and powerful, but complex to design and implement. A handful of governments from Washington State to Washington, D.C. have adopted BPS, and in 2022 a national coalition of 36 local and state governments committed to developing performance standards in collaboration with stakeholders, particularly frontline communities, to address health, climate and energy needs. Speakers shared the state of BPS today, supporting resources, and the realities of translating policy into energy and greenhouse gas savings.
