Energy Code Trainings in the Bay Area

The BayREN Codes & Standards Program promotes and provides trainings that engage building department staff and the building professionals they serve to increase understanding of new Energy Code developments and best practices for compliance (permit applicants) and enforcement (building departments).

More than 25 free trainings will be provided in support of this effort, based on locally indicated desires and goals. BayREN On-Demand Trainings


BayREN on-demand trainings are designed to educate both local officials and the private sector building community in key aspects of code compliance and enforcement, at your convenience. Each course below is ICC CEU certified and each registrant will receive 0.1 CEUs upon completion.

BayREN In-Person Trainings


BayREN trainings are designed to educate both local officials and the private sector building community in key aspects of code compliance and enforcement. Training topics are offered as a series and each training series addresses specific energy code compliance strategies and best practices. Trainings can be delivered as a 60-90 minute Short Session or a 3-4 hour Long Session.  If you plan to schedule all training series, BayREN suggests taking the trainings in the order in which they are listed below. For learning objectives and more detailed descriptions of the following trainings, please click here.

To request trainings, please complete the Training Request Form here and email a copy to codes@bayren.orgTrainings are delivered on-site at your jurisdiction Monday through Friday.  The following 2013 and 2016 Title 24 Part 6, Building Energy Efficiency Standards series are offered: 

  • Residential New Construction
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals.
        •  Short Course (60-90 min): Coordinating Plan Check with Field Inspection for Residential New Construction 
  • Residential Forms and Permit Submittals for Additions
    Expectations, best practices, and challenges for submitting energy code compliance document. This series is designed specifically for building professionals, but is also relevant for building department staff. 

•  Short Course (60-90 min): Energy Code Compliance Documentation and Permitting Processes
•  Long Course (3-4 hrs): Preparing and Aligning Energy Code Documentation with Installed Features for Residential Additions

  • Residential Envelope Compliance
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. 

•  Short Course (60-90 min): Envelope Compliance Forms and Processes
•  Long Course (3-4 hrs): Improving Compliance of Envelope Assemblies and Fenestration Performance

  • Residential HERS Registry Training for Building Departments
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. 

•  Short Course (60-90 min): Online HERS Registry Database and Demonstration

  • Nonresidential New Construction
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. 

•  Short Course (60-90 min): Coordinating Plan Check with Field Inspection for Low-rise Nonresidential New Construction

  • Nonresidential Fenestration Compliance 
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. ​

•  Short Course (60-90 min): Fenestration Compliance Forms and Processes

  • Nonresidential Mechanical Compliance
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. ​

•  Short Course (60-90 min): Ventilation Compliance Forms and Processes
•  
Long Course (3-4 hrs): Mechanical Ventilation, Outdoor Air and Demand Control Ventilation

  • Nonresidential Lighting Compliance
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. 

•  Short Course (60-90 min):  Indoor Lighting Forms, Processes, and Acceptance Tests
•  Long Course (3-4 hrs): Lighting Power Density, Controls and Daylit Spaces 

  • Nonresidential Tenant Improvements and Alterations
    Specific tools and strategies for enhancing energy code compliance. This series is designed specifically for building department staff, but is also relevant for building professionals. ​
